What are Patents?

What are patents?

  • Patents are intellectual property rights over inventions that confer twenty years of exclusive control over novel, non-obvious, and useful new inventions if the inventor discloses a description of how the invention works

How Do I  Remember It?

  • Think of patents as a way to protect your “patented” invention. It’s like having a legal document that gives you exclusive rights to your creation for a specified period.

Real World Example

  • Tesla, the electric car manufacturer, holds numerous patents for its innovative electric vehicle technology. These patents give Tesla exclusive rights to use and license its technology, preventing competitors from copying its designs or manufacturing processes.
  • This protection allows Tesla to maintain its competitive edge and continue to innovate in the electric vehicle market.
